Alliance of Independent Feminists

AIF Founding Story

The AIF Creation Story

Our story began in the Fall of 2000, when several of our founding members met at the Border Café in Harvard Square over margaritas and quesadillas and agreed on three important points.

First, our founders agreed that they considered themselves feminists who believed wholeheartedly in the potential and ability of women.

Second, they agreed that the prevalent feminist voices and movements - including those at Harvard Law School - were not necessarily representative of the beliefs of all women. .Our founders agreed that the "women's issues" those voices addressed most often - namely reproductive rights and sexual harassment - were too narrow a set to really capture the concerns of a broad spectrum of women.

Finally, our founders recognized a consistent lack of venues and opportunities for conservative, libertarian and moderate women at Harvard Law School to meet each other and build friendships, and a lack of events where such women could interact with successful female role models with similar values and opinions.

By starting the Alliance of Independent Feminists, our founders aimed to broaden the spectrum both topically and ideologically, in order to bring to the discussion table a less visible but perhaps more important set of issues, such as education, work and family balance and current trends within the feminist movement.
