2008 Spring Symposium:

Race Across Boundaries

Saturday, February 23, 2008, 2:15 - 3:30 p.m. at the Harvard Law School

Overview:
In accordance with the Harvard BlackLetter Law Journal’s commitment to exploring issues that address social and economic issues affecting African-Americans and other minorities, this year's panel, "Race Across Boundaries," will take a global approach in comparing and relating racial and ethnic tensions abroad to those experienced in the United States. This evaluation of intercontinental struggles with diversity is intended to shine light on the cross-national commonalities and differences in systematic racial struggle and institutional response, and, in particular, to consider the extent to which lessons learned by other countries could be implemented in order to promote positive race relations in America. In hosting this panel, we hope to stimulate discourse and debate among the students, alumni, professors, and members of the community at-large about how best to confront these pressing issues on both a domestic and a worldwide scale.

2007 Spring Symposium:

Social Engineering: Realizing the Profits of “Conscious Development”

Friday March 16, 2007 - 2:00 – 3:15 p.m. at the Harvard Law School

Overview:

This panel will provide a forum of discussion for students interested in becoming successful real estate attorneys and land developers, while addressing concerns of the negative impacts of sprawl and gentrification on urban, low income, and minority communities. Our focus will be to explore the ways that lawyers and developers can make a lucrative living in real estate without adversely harming poor and minority communities through the eyes of a developer, a real estate attorney, a community development corporation, an academic, and a government housing official.

Breaking the Shackles?: Federal Sentencing after the Guidelines
