I literally laughed at myself as I submitted my HLS application. I thought, “Me, a Harvard student, yeah right.” Forgive me for the cliché, but I’ve since learned that Harvard students put their pants on one leg at a time…just like everyone else.

When deciding to which law schools I should ante hundreds of dollars in application fees, I initially considered saving money by not applying to top schools such as HLS, in part because I didn’t want to subject myself to what I thought would be inevitable rejection. But I realized that by not applying, I was doing the admissions committees’ jobs for them, and I refused to let them off the hook that easily.

Still, when I arrived at Harvard, I expected to be overwhelmed by some intellectual monsters who seemingly had two brains. I’ve instead encountered people who are undeniably intelligent, yet refreshingly humble and original.

HLS thrives on the diversity of its culture and richness of its ideas. That means people like me -- like us -- need to have a substantial presence. As a 1L, I must concede that there remains plenty for me to learn about HLS. Yet, I can say with confidence that this is the place to be for a law school experience that develops and rewards more than just an individual’s legal understanding.
