Mission

The Harvard Environmental Law Society was founded in 1970 by three Harvard Law students who perceived a pressing need for the Law School, and the law in general, to respond more effectively to the nation's environmental problems. To this end, they created an organization that was committed to preparing students to creatively and intelligently use the law in the service of the environment.

Since HELS's founding, the field of environmental law has been ever-changing, but the organization’s central mission remains the same:

to strengthen the capacity of its members to make real contributions to the field of environmental law -- and to the environment itself -- in the local, national and international communities.

What is HELS?

The Harvard Environmental Law Society (HELS) is a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization directed and staffed by students at Harvard Law School. We organize a variety of events related to environmental law, from lectures and conferences to whale-watching trips and barbeques. We look not only at the legal side of environmental issues, but also at the policy, science and management aspects that all environmental professionals should understand. And of course, we have a great time in the process and organize some of the best trips and events on campus.

What will HELS do this year?

We have an exciting year ahead, and we invite you participate in any or all of our events. We also welcome your ideas for new events and trips. The following are some of the things HELS will do in 2008-2009:

* Hike, whale-watch, and go on other outings;
* Hold barbeques, movie nights, and other social events;
* Advocate for sustainable, green development at Harvard;
* Organize and participate in conferences, panels, and meetings;
* Participate in the growth of HLS’s Environmental Law Program;
* Host a variety of exciting environmental speakers;

How can I get involved?

The best way to stay informed is to join our mailing list. Just email els@law with “Join mailing list” in the subject line, and we will happily add you to our list. You can also send questions, comments, or suggestions to that address. We check it frequently.
