Welcome, 1Ls!
Congratulations on your admission to HLS, and thanks for your interest in the Federalist Society! We look forward to meeting you in September, and in the meantime would like to pass on some information. We are the largest chapter in the nation by a wide margin, and the diversity of our programming is unrivaled, both on this or any other campus. We hold many speeches and debates open to the entire HLS community as well as functions primarily for chapter members that allow us to interact and develop personal friendships, many of which last long after law school. Our membership is comprised of a diverse cross section of HLS students – conservatives, libertarians, moderates, and those who don’t necessarily fit one of these molds but are genuinely interested in debating and discussing ideas about the role of government.
The Federalist Society itself stands for three, and only three, propositions: limited government, the separation of powers, and the belief that judges should say what the law is, not what it should be. We exist solely to promote the exchange of ideas, not to promote particular policies, appointments, or politicians. We do not adopt political stances or advocate for political outcomes. We do not lobby for legislation. We do not sponsor nor do we endorse nominees or candidates.
As mentioned above, we do this through various events throughout the school year, including debates, moot court discussions, lectures, and informal social events. The social events are very well attended and are a great way to network with students who share similar interests. In the past these events have included informal happy hours, a winter holiday party, a James Madison birthday party, a ladies’ chocolate brunch, a 1L finals study break, and numerous other events. We also have a mentoring program that matches 1Ls with upperclass students who help them navigate their way through law school and provide advice, assistance, and support.
We look forward to meeting you at our welcome events this fall. If you are interested in learning more or joining the Harvard Federalist Society please e-mail us at fedsoc@law.harvard.edu and introduce yourself.
Good luck with your move, and have a great summer!
