Annual James Madison Colloquium
This colloquium discused the following readings:
  • 2 fact sheets about Madison's life and presidency
  • 2 short biographies of Madison
  • The Virginia Resolution of the Alien and Sedition Acts penned by Madison
  • Madison's 2 inaugural addresses
  • Madison's notes from the first week of the Constitutional Convention of 1787


  • Following the colloquim we held a party honoring the newest faction in American politics - the NASCAR dad - starting in the chapter office, and then heading down to the New England Aquarium IMAX to watch NASCAR 3D.

    Harvard Federalist Society Distinguished Alumni Series honors Rachel Brand
    Kicking off our Distinguished Alumni Series, we were pleased to honor Rachel Brand. Ms. Brand has been the Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Legal Policy of the United States Department of Justice since July 27, 2003. In this position, she assists with the development and implementation of a variety of civil and criminal policy initiatives, the President’s judicial nominations, and the management of the Office. She focuses particularly on issues related to the war on terrorism. Rachel previously served as an Associate Counsel to the President in the White House and, prior to that, was associated with the law firm Cooper, Carvin & Rosenthal. Before that, Rachel clerked for Charles Fried on the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts and for Justice Anthony M. Kennedy on the United States Supreme Court.

    Each year, the Federalist Society convenes an upper-class panel to help you prepare for exams. This year five of our members discussed their strategies and methods for studying, outlining, practice exams, and the exams themselves -- with advice individually tailored to many 1L professors.

    Dinner with Ted Cruz, Solicitor General of the State of Texas
    Ted Cruz '95, before becoming Solicitor General of the State of Texas, was the Director of the Federal Trade Commission's Office of Policy Planning. He has also served as Associate Deputy Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice; Domestic Policy Advisor to George W. Bush on the Bush-Cheney campaign; an associate at a Washington, D.C. firm; and a law clerk to Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist.

    Our first colloquium focused on whether federalist policy concerns necessitate disapproving of the Federal Marriage Amendment. This, like all of our colloquia, was a small discussion among our members discussing the entitled issue.
