Welcome 1Ls!The Harvard Law School Forum is a non-partisan organization dedicated to bringing open discussion to campus on a wide range of legal, social, and political issues. For over half a century, the Forum has been a leading campus organization, hosting some of the most dynamic and historically important figures of its time, including President John F. Kennedy, President Jimmy Carter, Justice Thurgood Marshall, Fidel Castro, Henry Kissinger. Since its inception, its mission has been to facilitate timely discussion on important topics, allowing students to interact with the people that help shape the world they live in. Last year was an exciting time for the Forum. We hosted David Plouffe, President Obama’s chief campaign manager, for a conversation on the future of the Democratic Party. Secretary Tom Ridge, the first Secretary of Homeland Security, discussed national security and civil rights. Dr. Jack Kevorkian spoke about personal freedom and the right to die. And Valerie Caproni, the General Counsel of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, spoke on revamping the legal guidelines governing Bureau investigations. Next year promises to be even more exciting, with several prominent speakers currently being lined up. We look forward to seeing you all at the events. There are plenty of opportunities for first-year students to get involved, and we hope you decide to join us. If you’re interested working with the Forum, either e-mail us at hlsforum@law.harvard.edu or come to our welcome barbeque (details to follow). Welcome, and good luck with the first year!
