How to Apply
Application and Selection Process
All first-year students are eligible to apply for Bureau membership. The application process consists of:
(1) An essay portion that involves responding to a question based on a particular fact pattern; (2) submission of a cover letter of interest and resume; and
(3) a 20 minute interview.
All candidates must complete the essay question. This question consists of a fact pattern simulating a type of case that is regularly handled by the Bureau. Applicants will be asked to provide responses based on material included in the application. The application does not require any outside research or knowledge of a specific area of substantive law. One of the primary purposes of the application process is to allow students to illustrate the strength of their interest in the Bureau and to give the student an accurate portrayal of the type of work they would do as a Bureau member.
The essay question will be evaluated by current Bureau members based on a blind grading system. Along with this question, applicants will be asked to submit a cover letter and resume that will be reviewed separately. Based on all of these materials, a group of finalists will be selected for interviews. Each finalist will complete a 20 minute interview.
The Bureau is committed to maintaining a diverse membership for the benefit of the organization and our clients. For example, to address the needs of our non-English speaking clients, we may give some weight to strong skills in languages other than English.
