HLS Latter-day Saints
The Harvard Law Latter-day Saints Student Association (HLLDS) is made up of HLS students and their families who are members of, or interested in, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. HLLDS provides support for students seeking to maintain a spiritual foundation during their study of the law and allows members to associate with other students who have similar religious backgrounds and interests. Our membership continues to grow from just a handful of students a few years ago to approximately 40 HLS students and their families in 2006. HLLDS became an official chapter of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society in 2005.
HLLDS organizes and sponsors a mix of spiritual, academic, and social activities throughout the year. A biweekly class taught by fellow law students as well as local Institute instructors allows students an opportunity to study the Gospel of Jesus Christ, often through the unique perspective of the law. HLLDS also works to bring prominent LDS lawyers to campus each year to meet students and speak about their individual areas of expertise and accomplishments. Past speakers have included federal circuit and district court judges, United States senators, law professors, law firm partners, and other legal practitioners both in public and in private practice. For the use of our members, HLLDS maintains its own collection of class outlines and study guides, final exams, and alumni information, and we also conduct tips sessions for final exam preparation, job searches, and the law review competition. Finally, HLLDS sponsors a number of social events throughout the year where students and their families are able to develop lifelong friendships and enjoy the breadth of experiences provided in Cambridge and throughout New England.
