Who We Are and What We Do

The Law and Philosophy Society offers HLS students and faculty the opportunity to explore more fully many of the issues raised at the intersection of law and philosophy. It does this by sponsoring reading groups, by promoting informal discussion, and by organizing speakers and conferences on philosophical issues in the law.

Location TBD
Do you find yourself wondering what your professors mean when they talk about "legal realism," "classical formalism," and "CLS"? If so, you're not alone! That's why the Law & Philosophy Society will be hosting a reading group this year focused on Modern American Jurisprudence. Throughout the year, we'll be reading and discussing the seminal works of American legal thought. Our hope is that the reading group will not only be interesting in its own right, but also provide 1Ls with some knowledge of the debates that under-gird their classes. Our first meeting will be on Wednesday, September 28, 2005. We will read "The Path of the Law" by Oliver Wendell Holmes, the article that scholars generally agree launched the modern era of lawyering. The article can be found at http://www.constitution.org/lrev/owh/path_law.htm.
