Respond logoRespond, Inc.

As the oldest domestic violence agency in New England, and the second oldest in the nation, Respond, Inc. has a history of providing aid and shelter to abused women and their children. It began in 1974 as a grassroots effort of a few women to help the women in their community of Somerville, MA who needed protection from abuse. Since then, it has expanded to ten other communities in Massachusetts, and helps people from all over the country. The organization also provides training for other entities about how to identify and deal with domestic violence. Other services include a hotline, legal advocacy, child care and counseling, and emergency 911 cell phones.

The demand for emergency housing greatly outweighs their capacity, and Respond is forced to turn away 90% of women who seek shelter with them. Every year, 5,500 women are turned away from shelters in Massachusetts. Respond is currently in the midst of a capital campaign to raise $2.5 million to pay for their new, larger shelter (which will double their capacity) and renovations. They have already raised $2 million.

logo The Conservation Fund

Since 1985, The Conservation Fund has been working with public, private and nonprofit organizations to conserve the nation’s land and water legacy—protecting more than 5.5 million acres across the country. It achieves its goals by helping acquire property from willing sellers to protect open space, wildlife habitat, public recreation areas, river corridors and historic places. The Fund also works with communities and industries to help them implement sustainable practices, and provides resources and training for professionals.

Emphasizing the integration of economic and environmental goals, the Fund works closely with its partners to achieve on-the-ground results. It is a non-membership, non-advocacy organization that uses 97% of funds on its programs.

Doe logo The Doe Fund, Inc.

The Doe Fund is an innovative non-profit organization which seeks to help homeless men and women break the vicious cycle of homelessness, welfare dependency, and incarceration through paid-work opportunities, safe transition housing, and a comprehensive array of social, vocational, and educational services.

All Doe Fund programs ultimately strive to end homelessness by providing the opportunities and resources that homeless persons need to transform their lives through work and personal responsibility.

people The V Foundation

The V Foundation is dedicated to finding a cure for cancer.  The story of the V Foundation is one of inspiration and hope for the millions of people fighting cancer.  Launched as a joint effort between ESPN and legendary basketball coach Jim Valvano just months before his death from cancer, the V Foundation is now 14 years old.

In those 14 years, it has raised over $60 million to fight against Cancer.  Screening these funds through its well-respected Scientific Review Board, the Foundation seeks to ensure that research dollars go exclusively to those research projects with high potentials for success.

The V Foundation's financial success over the past 14 years now allows it to ensure that 100% of all new direct cash donations go to fund research and related programs.  Additionally, the Foundation consistently achieves the highest rating from Charity Navigator, the largest charity evaluation service in the United States.

people The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund

Created in 2000, the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund originally provided grants to the spouses and dependent children of deceased servicemen and women.  After federal legislation was passed in 2005 providing similar benefits to surviving family members, the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund redirected its support to severely wounded servicemen and women.

Having recently completed the construction of a state of the art physical rehabilitation center for servicemen and women who have suffered catastrophic injuries while serving our country, the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund is currently focusing on providing physical rehabilitation and other services to injured servicemen and women and their families.

HLSPopulation Services International*

Population Services International (PSI) sells and promotes products aimed at improving health and quality of life for people in the developing world.  These products include condoms (to slow the spread of HIV/AIDS and other diseases, as well as reduce unwanted pregnancies), bednets (to protect people from malaria), and water purification kits.   PSI is committed to helping people as cost-effectively as possible, and tracks its activities, costs, and results with an unusual degree of thoroughness.  *Recommended by GiveWell - see GiveWell's full review here.

HLSPartners in Health*

Partners in Health (PIH) runs comprehensive community health programs, staffing full-service hospitals and health centers with trained local staff.  Unlike many international charities, which focus on a particular disease or problem at a time, PIH is notable for its emphasis on serving people’s needs holistically and turning no one away. *Recommended by GiveWell - see GiveWell's full review here.

HLSNurse Family Partnership*

The Nurse Family Partnership (NFP) supports programs offering home visits (from trained registered nurses) to low-income, first-time mothers. Nurses advise the mothers on prenatal health, child care, and personal life management (including birth spacing and employment counseling).  The program has been the subject of several formal, rigorous evaluations that imply measurable impacts on both mothers (particularly on how long they go between births) and children (particular cognitive and behavioral measures).  NFP stands above any other developed-world organization we know of in terms of its commitment to replicating a proven program that can bring about long-term improvements in its clients’ lives.  *Recommended by GiveWell - see GiveWell's full review here.

HLSKnowledge is Power Program*

Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP) is a network of more than 50 charter schools (mostly grades 5-8) across the country, including 4 in New York City, focusing on improving outcomes for disadvantaged youth.  All students in the school's vicinity are eligible for admission, which is determined through a random lottery, and tuition is free.  GiveWell believes that there is a relatively strong (though not ironclad) evidential case that KIPP is improving academic outcomes in a significant and measurable way (one that shows up in test scores) for disadvantaged youth. *Recommended by GiveWell - see GiveWell's full review here.
